Britain’s turn at hosting the majors is fast approaching as the golf season continues with the 2011 British Open Championship.
The 2011 British Open will take place at the Royal St. George’s links, marking the 150th anniversary of the prestigious tournament. The Royal St. George’s is a unique course, located in England, and features an intimidating mixture of dense rough, sand dunes and winding fairways that has always demanded the best possible performance from players. Each year the British Open takes place at one of nine different links in Scotland and England (and, once, in Northern Ireland) and, in recent years, has offered competitors some of the largest prize money available in the sport.
The Open is the oldest of the majors and enjoys a rich history through decades of high-calibre play. It was first held in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1860 (at the Prestwick Golf Club) and has since maintained a place of honour among the four legs of the majors. Last year saw South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen win the title at St. Andrews, following on American, Stewart Cink’s 2009 victory at Turnberry and Ireland’s Padraig Harrington’s two year reign (from 2007-08). These champions (and many others) will head to the Royal St. George’s in mid-July to compete for the Open’s revered gold, silver and bronze medals.
The 2011 British Open Championship will take place from 10th-17th July 2011.
