As drivers and fans alike anxiously await the conclusion of the 2009 Formula One season (set to take place at next week’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix) they are sure to pay close attention to the rapidly approaching events of the Grande Premio do Brasil.
The Sao Paolo race track is well known by Formula One fans for its unorthodox layout. The Grande Premio do Brasil allows drivers long stretches of open road (most notably with the latter three quarters of Sector One and almost the entirety of Sector Three) while cramming a large number of difficult turns and curves into Sector Two.
Each of the course’s relatively short (4.309 kilometre) laps must be completed 71 times for a total race distance of 305.909 kilometres. J.P. Montoya holds the current record for best time at the Grande Premio do Brasil for his 2004 completion time of 1:11.473.
Drivers come to Sao Paulo for three days of practice and placing from October 16th to 18th. Friday the 16th is composed of a full day of warm-up racing (Practice One from 10.00-11.30am and Practice Two from 2.00-3.30pm). One more practice takes place from 11am to noon before qualifying rounds are carried out at 2pm. The race itself begins at 2pm on Sunday and will determine the results of the season going into the final event at the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix next week.
